Jean-Philippe Dallaire was a fantastic painter of the figure. Jean-Philippe Dallaire was born in Hull, Quebec, Canada in the year 1916. Dallaire worked as a painter, illustrator, and cartoonist.
Dallaire attended the Ecole des Beaux-Artes located in Montreal, Quebec.
The artist won a grant that allowed him to study in Paris, France. When the artist was in Paris the Germans took over the city and placed Dallaire and his wife under arrest. The artist would remain captive for four years.
In this clip we view my favorite work of the artist on the auction block at Heffel’s in 2009. The work went for more than double the high end estimate of $70,000:
Jean-Philippe Dallaire passed away in 1965 at the age of 49 years old.
Price range information: Dallaire worked in oils, gouache, and watercolor. Prices range from $10,000 to $160,000.
Dallaire had a style that is difficult to categorize, but very enjoyable to look at. The artist painted on many different surfaces from cardboard to canvas applying many thin layers of paint to achieve many varieties of texture.
