Arno Rafael Minkkinen is an internationally renown photographer who often incorporates the human figure in his work. Many of his images are self portraits. Arno Rafael Minkkinen was born in Helsinki, Finland in the year 1945. He emigrated to the United States in 1951.
Minkkinen attended Wagner College based out of Rochester, New York. He earned a degree in English literature.
The artist went to earn a M.F.A. in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Whilst working in New York as a advertising copywriter the artist began to experiment with photography by taking self portraits.
Minkkinen is part of many prestigious collections including the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City and the Museum of Modern Art located in Paris, France.
The artist has also taught at the collegiate level and is part of the faculty at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
Beginning in 2009 the artist started to experiment with film.
