Julie Mehretu is a contemporary painter and printmaker. Mehretu’s work is abstract but often has references to architecture. Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Abada, Ethiopia in the year 1970. The artist often works in large formats using multiple mediums.
When the artist was seven her family left Ethiopia relocating to Michigan in the United States. Mehretu went on earn a degree from Kalamazoo College, also located in Michigan. The artist went on to earn a master’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Price range information: Works range from $10,000 for a print up to $5 million dollars for an original.

Mehretu is based out of New York City where she shares a studio with the painter Jessica Rankin.
The artist has works in many prominent collections including the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City.
Mehretu was awarded the “genius grant” from the MacArthur Fellowship in 2005.

I enjoy the many mediums and large format used by the artist. I love the fact her work includes so many different ideas, but doesn’t appear cluttered.
