Hendra Gunawan was an Indonesian painter. Hendra Gunawan was born in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia in the year 1918. Gunawan was a self- taught painter who worked in a style that can be called folk or outsider art.

Some recurring motifs include fishing, boats, and traditional cultural holidays.

The artist was outspoken in his views against colonialism. He also faught hard against poverty.

Gunawan was associated with a movement against the government called the Indonesian Communist Party. The artist was put in jail for much of the 1960’s, and was finally released from prison in 1978.

Hendra Gunawan passed away in 1983.
