Hélio Oiticica was a Brazilian painter, printmaker, and scupltor. Hélio Oiticica was born in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in the year 1937.

The artist studied under famed Brazilian painter Ivan Serpa.

Oiticica was part of the Neo-Concrete movement from 1959 to 1961. In Brazil a movement had started with artists using concrete as a medium, the second group of artists of which Oiticica used concrete in more expressive ways.

When he painted Oiticica worked in the style of geometric abstraction using bold color. The artist often used gouache in his paintings.

Hélio Oiticica passed away after having a stroke in 1980. He was 42 years of age.

What a great style of art! I enjoy his three dimensional portrayal of geometric abstraction. The viewer feels as if they are walking through a Shirley Jaffe painting!
