Early in his working life Hatofsky was a police officer. The artist also was drafted and served in World War Two.
Hatofsky had an extensive art education. He began with classes given by the Works Progress Administration. The artist also studied at the Art Student’s League in New York City, and with the painter Hans Hofmann. Hatofsky also studied in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumier.
