This website’s favorite painter of geometric abstraction works has died at the age of 92, Shirley Jaffe. Shirley Jaffe was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in the year 1923.

The artist attended Cooper Union College located in New York City.

During the beginning of her career Jaffe worked in the advertising department at Macy’s.

Jaffe moved to Paris, France in 1949. Jaffe loved the French lifestyle and lived in France for the remainder of her lifetime.

Jaffe was renown for geometric based shapes and swirls made with one color.

Shirley Jaffe was a master of color and graphic design. Through her many paintings she leaves behind a great deal of inspiration.

Scott Fife is an American contemporary sculptor renown for his larger than life cardboard sculptures of the portrait. Scott Fife was born in the year 1949.

Fife attended the Minneapolis College of Design where he earned a bachelor of arts degree. Fife also earned a bachelor of architecture from the University of Idaho.

Fife employs cardboard, glue, and drywall screws in most of his works.

Laurence Vallieres is a Canadian contemporary sculptor and mixed media artist. The artist is renown for her cardboard sculptures of pop culture including Mickey Mouse and gorillas.

Laurence Vallieres was born in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada in the year 1986.

I enjoy the amount of creativity involved with this artist. She does a great job of using sculpture with contemporary items such as cardboard to depict pop culture charactes such as Mickey Mouse. A great mixture of contemporary materials and subject matter!

Sidney Jonas Budnick was an American abstract painter. Sidney Jonas Budnick was born in New York City in the year 1921.

Budnick earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology located in Chicago. The artist went on to earn a master of architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. His teachers at both institutions were part of the Bauhaus movements.

One artist who inspired Budnick was Piet Mondrian. Budnick was a fan of the De Stijl movement.

Budnick worked as an architect for the Department of Parks and Recreation for the State of California.

Sidney Budnick passed away in 1994.

Budnick’s work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City.

Sidney Budnick created a great style of fantastic style of abstract art that had some elements of op art, color field painting, and hard edge geometric abstraction.

Howard Arkley was an Australian painter renown for his brightly colored paintings of suburban life down under. Howard Arkley was born in Melbourne, Australia in the year 1951.

Arkley was one of the most successful artists in history whose main body of work was created using the airbrush.

One artist whose work inspired Howard Arkley was the great Australian painter John Brack.

In creating his work the artist often used stencils made of ordinary household items including laundry baskets and fly screens.

One of the first series to receive attention from the critics was based on gates the artist saw in his neighborhood. He enjoyed creating art with using the patterns and colors of the gates.

Arkley’s work is part of the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery. Below we view this image of Nick Cave, a famous musician from Australia:

 

Howard Arkley died from a heroin overdose in 1999. He was 49 years of age.

Price range information: Works range from $25,000 to $500,000. The artist usually worked with polymer paints, but also used acrylics and gouache.

Howard Arkley showed a very modernist style in his paintings that reminds this viewer of the great Roy Lichtenstein. The way both artists recreated images of everyday objects like chairs or even landscapes where normal flat and boring things like carpets are given interesting geometric shapes and patterns are very interesting to look at.

Liu Dan is a contemporary ink painting master. Liu Dan was born in Nanjing, China in the year 1953. Dan creates wonderful paintings of landscapes, rocks, and flowers in ink and watercolor.

Price range information: Works range from $125, 000 to $750,000.

The artist attended the Jiangsu Painting Academy in China located in Hangzhou, China.

Dan also studied the art of calligraphy with his grandfather.

Liu Dan moved  the United States in 1981. Dan relocated back to China in 2006.

The artist is based out of Beijing, China.

Liu Dan is truly one of the great master ink painters in the world today. Dan has a great eye for composing visually interesting paintings with great detail. No soft or or lost edges in his work.

Lillian Schwartz is an American contemporary painter. Lillian Schwartz was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in the year 1927.

Schwartz was one of the first artists to produce computer generated art. She was influencial in getting the fine arts community to accept art made with aid of a computer.

Schwartz went to school to be a nurse. Schwartz earned a degree in nursing from the College of Nursing and Health at the Univeristy of Cincinatti. Whilst stationed in asia after the Second World War she began to study calligraphy.  Although she has studied art with renown professionals she developed her computer generated art on her own.

The work of Lillian Schwartz can be found in the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City.

Schwartz created a computer generated television ad to showcase a renovation of the Museum of Modern Art. This piece earned the artist an Emmy award.

Eugene J. Martin was an African-American painter working in an abstract style. Eugene Martin was born in Washington D.C. in the year 1938. His mother died giving birth to him. His father was a jazz musician.

After his mother died Eugene and his brother were placed in foster care. After running away on multiple occasions he was moved to a farm. He found an interestinghobby in painting the landscapes and portraits. The artist did not run away.

Eugene Martin attended the Corcoran School of Art located in Washington D.C.

In 2001 Eugene Martin had a brain hemmorrhage and a stroke whilst in the country of Belgium. The artist received therapy, and resumed painting until he passed away in 2005. He was 66 years of age.

Eugene Martin’s work is a great mix of abstraction and color. Martin also had a great eye for arranging shapes to give his work maximum movement.

Harry Callahan was an American photographer renown for his images of the landscape. Harry Callahan was born in Detroit, Michigan in the year 1912. Callaha is self taught, and he began learning the art of photography when he was 26 years of age.

Callahan attended Michigan State University. He quit and went back to work for the Chrysler automobile company. He began to learn photography on his own, and he also joined the company camera club.

Price range information: Works range from $10,000 to $150,000.

Callahan was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was awarded the National Medal of the Arts.

The artist taught photography for fifteen years at the Chicago Institute of Design. Callahan also founded the photography program at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Works of the artist can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art located in New York City, and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art.

The artist also liked to experiment with different ideas in his work such as using multiple exposures, and blurring the image.

Callahan is one of few photographers with many renown works being in black and white or in color. With his abstracted and blurry imagery Callahan brings to mind the work of Thomas Ruff.

Wallace Berman was one of the first artists to produce assemblage works. Berman is often referred to as the “Father of Assemblage Art.” The artist was one of the first to take newspaper clippings, magazine photographs, and combine them with paint.

Wallace Berman was born in Staten Island, New York in the year 1926.

Berman was kicked out of high school for gambling. The artist would eventually study art at the the Jepsen Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute both located in Los Angeles, CA.

Berman started working in a factory that produced furniture. The artist would collect scrap wood from work and start to creat sculptures.

Price range information: Works range from $10,000 to $100,000. The artist created photographs, collages, and was also a printmaker.

Berman also designed record album covers.

An image of the artist appears on the cover of the Beatles famed Sargeant Pepper Album.

Wallace Berman was killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver in 1976. Berman was 50 years of age.

Wallace Berman had a very innovative sense of design. His artwork is very similar to what we see in the commercial advertising industry.
