Felrath Hines was an African- American painter working in an abstract style. Felrath Hines was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in the year 1913. Hines also had a long career as a conservator working for many institutions including the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C.
The artist started taking art education classes when he was 13 years of age. He won a contest and attended the John Herron School of Art Saturday School.
Hines began his collegiate career at the Art Institute of Chicago. He also attended New York Unviversity, and the Pratt Institute.
Felrath Hines passed away in 1993. He was 79 years of age.

Felrath Hines was one of the great pioneers of abstract painting. Hines had a wonderful grasp of color, and a great eye for creating interesting shapes. Hines work is similar to that of the great Etel Adnan.
