Atwood often works with people who are seen on the edge of society. Her work is often compared to the late Diane Arbus.
The artist received her first camera in 1975. She began to photograph prostitutes she found in Paris. In 1980 she was able to obtain funds for a project about blind children.
One series well received by art critics was on prisons. Atwood has documented more than 40 prisons. Another well acclaimed series was about the aftermath of landmines.
