Kukuli Velarde is a contemporary painter and ceramist. Velarde is renown for her work with the human face and figure. Velarde comes from the country of Peru.
Velarde earned a B.F.A. in ceramics from Hunter College located in Manhattan, New York. She also studied at the University of Mexico.
The artist was the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship in 2015. She has also received a grant from the Pollack/ Krasner Foundation.

Velarde tries to portray the clash of cultures that existed in her life growing up in Peru. The very different lifestyles and ways of the indigenous people against those of European decent.
When the artist paints she often uses aluminum as her surface of choice.

What a creative artist! Her vessels all seem to have very unique shapes of their own. When her very creative painted faces are added the works appear as a blend of the potter George Ohr and Harry Potter. Her characters have enchangint eyes.
