Lonnie Holley is a contemporary African- American folk artist. Lonnie Holley was born in Birmingham, Alabama in the year 1950. Holley came from a large family, he was the 7th of 27 children.
Holley is also known as the Sand Man.

Holley began his art career in 1979. He carved tombstones for his sister’s daughters who died in a house fire. The artist used to carve in sandstone before using found objects in his art.
The artist has 15 sons and daughters.
