Artist of the moment……………Robert Neuman

Robert Sterling Neuman was an Abstract Expressionist painter. Robert Neuman was born in a mining town called Kellogg, Idaho in the year 1926. His parents owned a hardware store.

The artist began his collegiate studies at the University of Idaho. Neuman also attended the California College of Arts and Crafts located in Oakland. In his post graduate studies Neuman took courses at the San Francisco College of Fine Arts, and also Mills College.

Neuman served in the Army Air Corps towards the end of World War Two. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Although he is grouped as an Abstract Expressionist painter the artist often worked with certain themes or motifs in mind. He also enjoyed portraying the figure in an abstract style.

Neuman was a recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship. He also was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.

The artist was also a professor at Harvard University, Keene State College, and Brown University.

Robert Neuman passed away in 2015. He was 88 years of age.

Robert Neuman was a fantastic painter with a great sense of design. His work has a great sense of feeling and movement. Neuman also exhibited a wonderful use of color in his art.

My favorite designs by the artists are his works featuring many circles broken down into more complex shapes.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was a fantastic graphic designer, painter, and master of working with stained glass. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of the founder of this company. Louis Tiffany was born in New York City in the year 1848.

The artist was educated at the Pennsylvania and Eagleswood Military Academies.

Tiffany began his artistic journey aspiring to be a painter. The artist switched to using glass as his medium in 1875. Tiffany was a fantastic painter of the landscapes and also still lifes. Much of his work has the feel of the Orientalist movement of painters.

With some money and a few shark tank like business connections from his father the artist began his own glass factory. The artist would eventually close down this venture and begin the Tiffany Glass Company which became Tiffany Studios in 1902.

Tiffany also created wonderful mosaic works.

Below we visit the largest collection of works by Tiffany located at the Morse Museum located in Winter Park Florida:

The artist was also the first design director at Tiffany and Company, a jewelry company also started by his father.

Tiffany was married twice. The first time to Mary Goddard who passed away in her mid thirties. The couple had four children. After the death of his first wife he married Louise Knox. The artist had four children with his second wife.

Louis Comfort Tiffany passed away in January of 1933. He was 84 years of age.

Price range information: Tiffany painted in oils, watercolors, and gouache. Prices range from $20,000 to $177,000.

Louise Comfort Tiffany is renown for his work with stained glass, but he was capable of working with any medium, and had a unmatched eye for creating visually stimulating imagery no matter what the medium.

Artist of the moment…………..Taejin Seong

Taejin Seong is a contemporary painter and printmaker. Taejin Seong was born in Korea in the year 1974.

Taejin Seong earned a B.F.A. in printmaking from Chugye University of Art. He went on to post graduate studies eventually earning a M.F.A. in printmaking from Hong- Ik University.

Seong has a very interesting creative process. The artist takes a woodblock print and creates painted wood carving of the same subject. The end result is an embossed wood panel covered with acrylic paint and ink.

Two themes prevalent in the artists work are the feeling of a lost childhood, and frustration with the ideals of society.

What an interesting portrayal of the modern landscape. I enjoy the color and texture of the artist.

Hiroshi Sugimoto is a contemporary photographer renown for his black and white image of the sea and ocean. Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Tokyo, Japan in the year 1948.

The artist began his collegiate career studying politics and sociology at St. Paul’s located in Tokyo, Japan. Later he would to the United States and study art at the Art Center College of Design located in Los Angeles, California.

Sugimoto also enjoys working with architecture.

The artist has received a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Sugimoto splits his time amongst New York City and Tokyo, Japan.

Hiroshi Sugimoto has a very large body of wonderful images that can compete with Getty Images when it comes to quality. My favorite works are the images of the sea.

Patricia Urquiola is a contemporary architect and interior designer. Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo, Spain in the year 1961. Urquiola’s design style is very hot on the furniture market for her tables and chairs.

Urquiola attended the Polytechnic University of Milan where she studied architecture. After college she went on to open a studio in Milan in 2001.

The artist strives to make all of her pieces include four items: innovation, emotion, rigor, and mental comfort.

One of the most successful artists in the world when it comes to doing industrial design Urquiola has worked with many internationally renown companies including BMW, Louis Vitton, Moroso, and the Ritz Carlton Marriott.

Below a brief interview with Patricia Urquiola:

Urquiola has a work titled the fjord armchair which is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City.

Its great to see art in contemporary furniture design. As it seems people are living in smaller living spaces new designs for furniture that is slightly smaller than our grandparent’s style of tables but with more color is in heavy demand.

Brian Calvin is a contemporary painter renown for his work with the face and figure. Brian Calvin was born in Visalia, California in the year 1969.

Calvin earned a B.F.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara. The artist went on to earn a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The artist is now based out of Los Angeles, California.

When looking at the work of Brian Calvin two painters come to mind. The first is Alex Katz for the flatness of his paintings. The second artist is Margaret Keane. The star painter of people with a focus on big eyes whose husband demanded she tell the world that he created the paintings, when in fact he could not paint! A movie called Big Eyes was made in 2014 detailing her interesting career.

Hernan Bas is a contemporary painter. Hernan Bas was born in Miami, Florida in the year 1978.

The artist attended the New World School of Art. This institution is a unique blend of college and high school education programs. The school awards a bachelor of art degree from Miami Dade College, a bachelor of fine arts and bachelor of music from the University of Florida, and a high school degree from the state program.

Hernan Bas is now based out of Detroit, Michigan.

What a great artist that is capable of working in many mediums. I enjoy the patterns he makes in the design of his clothes. His work has a great narrative quality to it telling many stories at one time.

Seund Ja Rhee was a painter from South Korea. Seund Ja Rhee was born in Jinju, South Korea in the year 1918. In addition to painting Rhee was also a printmaker and ceramics artist.

Rhee attended college in Japan at Jissen Women’s University located in Tokyo. She then married and had three boys.

After the Korean War the artist became separated from her sons so she decided to move to Paris, France. Whilst in Paris she attended the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere.

During her lifetime she was popular in France and South Korea.

‘Seund Ja Rhee passed away in March of 2009. She was 90 years old.

What an interesting style the artist created. Her art was very abstract, but organized. Many interesting patterns of repeating shapes and patterns can be seen in her work.

Michael Rey is a contemporary abstract painter. Michael Rey was born in Sarasota, Florida in the year 1979.

The artist earned a B.F.A. from the Ringling College of Art and Design located in Sarasota. Rey went on to earn a M.F.A. from Art Center College of Design at Pasadena, California.

Rey’s work is somewhat similar to the artist Justin Adian, both artists produce what is in the end a mixture of a sculpture and a painting.

Michael Rey does a great job at focusing on shape. His style is similar to that of Ellsworth Kelly. Whereas Kelly strove for a flat appearance, Rey promotes the depth of his work by creating holes in the surface. Most works are painted on clay and panel.

Justin Adian is a contemporary visual artist. Justin Adian was born in Fort Worth, Texas in the year 1976.

Adian earned a B.F.A. from the University of North Texas. The artist went on to postgraduate studies eventually earning a M.F.A. from Rutgers University.

The artist is now based out of New York City.

Adian has an interesting creative process. To get the end result the artist stretches canvases painted with oils, enamel, or spray paint around foam cushions. One of the artist’s goals is to give color three dimensional form without actually producing a sculpture.

The artist is influenced by minimalism.

What a great example of contemporary minimalism. Ellsworth Kelly’s work is similar but flat in comparison.
