Craig Alan is a contemporary visual artist renown for his mixed media portrait images made up of human pixels. Craig Alan was born in San Bernardino, California in the year 1971.

Alan became interested in art after his family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana when he was youngster. Whilst there he was inspired to learn how to draw and eventually went on to earn money as a street portrait artist. His prices at the time were 15 for black and white and 30 for a watercolor portrait.

The artist is best known for his Populus series. This is his signature series that organizes people into recognizable shapes and portraits. It was inspired after looking down from a balcony at the shape of people attending a wedding party.

The artist studied studio arts at the University of Alabama at Mobile. Whilst in college Alan also studied theater and set design. Alan was on scholarship for soccer.
