August Sander was an internationally renown portrait photographer and documentary film maker from Germany. August Sander was born in Herdorf, Rhine Province, Germany in the year 1876. His father was a carpenter.

Sander served time in the military as a photographer’s assistant from 1897 until 1899.

Sander began working for a photography studio located in Linz, Austria in 1901. In 1902 he was a made a partner in the firm. In 1904 he became the sole owner of the company.

The artist relocated to Germany opened his own photography studio in 1909 located in Linz.

Sander was renown for his portraits of people from all classes and all walks of life. In the mid 1930’s he began to focus on architecture and nature as his subjects.

August Sander passed away in 1964. He was 87 years of age.

August Sander had a great talent for capturing interesting looking people. His work with people strikes me as similar to that of the great Diane Arbus. Both found very interesting subjects for their portrait work.
