Melvin Way is a contemporary artist. Melvin Way was born in Ruffin County, South Carolina in the year 1954.

As a teenager Way split his time between South Carolina and New York. He was highly interested in music at this time.

His work often contains references to math formulas, musical scores, and even the artist’s formula for making cocaine. Way often creates his art with a ball point pen. Way often works in small sizes, less than 12 inches on each side. One piece often takes the artist months to create.

After high school Way began to show signs of mental illness. Way would eventually become homeless.

With the help of Andrew Castrucci, an instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Way found a new path forward in life. Castrucci gave art classes at a homeless shelter that the artist way staying at.

Melvin Way is a great example of modern “outsider” art. His work reminds me of the great notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci. A great artistic mind is always thinking of new ideas and concepts and Way’s style is a great example of this.
