Andrew Clemens was a unique artist from Iowa renown for his work with sand art. Andrew Clemens was born in Dubuque, Iowa in the year 1854.

When he was a youngster Clemens suffered inflammation of the brain. This experience left him with a permanent loss of hearing when he was just five years of age. When he was thirteen he was sent to the Iowa State School for the Deaf.

Price range information: Many works priced between $10,000 and $50,000.

Clemens became a master sand artist during summer breaks from school. The artist would collect colored sand grains. The grains were naturally colored by iron and minerals. He found plenty of sand at Pikes Peak State Park in Iowa.

Clemens would collect sand grains and separate them and place them in different jars. The artist let the pressure from other grains bind the work together. Clemens didn’t use any glue.

Clemens portrayed boats, flowers, and birds in his sandbottles. Some bottles took up to one year to complete.

In this clip some works by Andrew Clemens:

Andrew Clemens passed away in 1894, he was 37 years old.

Andrew Clemens work is just great. Not using any glue makes the work even more fascinating. Clemens’ work was one of kind, and lets hope more people get exposed to his incredible sand art masterpieces.
