Jorge Deredia is a contemporary sculptor renown for his modernist work with the figure. Jorege Deredia was born in Heredia, Costa Rica in the year 1954.
The artist first became interested in sculpture when he was 13 years old.

Deredia began his collegiate career at the University of Costa Rica at San Jose. When Deredia was 22 he won a scholarship to study abroad in Italy.
In Italy Deredia became even more interested in sculpture and eventually chose to remain in Italy where he could study the masters he so admired. Whilst in Italy Deredia attended Academy of Fine Arts at Carrara, and the University of Florence.
