Morikazu Kumagai was unique among the Japanese artists. As printmakers many of them had the same subject matter, and its great fun to compare them to each other. For instance Kumagai’s image of Mount Fuji is far more simplistic in line work than many of his peers.
If one were to compare Kumagai with contemporary painters two that come to mind would be Alex Katz and Etel Adnan. All three artists emphasize flat blocks of color with simple shapes. Adnan’s landscapes are very similar to those of Kumagai.
