Marc Quinn is British mixed media artist and sculptor. Quinn is renown for using unique items as mediums including blood and feces. Marc Quinn was born in London, England in the year 1964.
Quinn attended Robinson College located in Cambridge where he studied art and history. Quinn also worked as an assistant to the sculptor Barry Flanagan.
Price range information: Paintings start at $30,000. The sculptures that bring a high price in the private market are his sculptures of Kate Moss doing yoga. These works have sold many times for more than 1 million dollars.
A recurring theme in the work of Marc Quinn is his portrayal of parts of the human body. My favorite works of these are his paintings of human eyes and fingerprints. Quinn breaks the circle of the eye into many abstract shapes and colors you might not associate with blue eyes.
One famous sculpture by Marc Quinn is titled “Self.” The work is a portrait made of blood. It took five years for the artist to collect enough blood to make the work. The work used 9 liters of blood and had to be kept in a refrigeration unit. In this clip a closer look at this work of art:
The work was eventually purchased by collector and art promoter Charles Saatchi who sold it to Stephen Cohen, before ending up in the British National Portrait Gallery.
Quinn has also created many works using flowers which are frozen and then covered with silicone. The artist also creates sculptures of flowers.
The artist has also created sculptures celebrating people who are disabled, with missing arms or legs.
In this clip we view an exhibition of works by the artist:
Quinn is part of many prominent collections including the Tate Modern of London, the Museum of Modern Art located in Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art located in New York City.
What a great artist capable of working in any medium!
