Ma Dasheng is a contemporary painter and printmaker from China. Ma Desheng was born in Beijing China in the year 1952.
Desheng was deemed unfit to learn painting at the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts. Desheng taught himself the art of woodblock printing and became known for his artwork featuring stones.
In the 1970’s Desheng helped to form a group of liberal artists who began showing their work. The collective was called The Stars Group. The Chinese Authorities shut down the group of thinkers and Desheng relocated to Paris in the mid 1980’s. He’s been based out of Paris since 1986.

The artist works in oils, acrylics, inks, and wood. He is also a prolific printmaker.

In addition to being a painter Ma Desheng is also a poet and performance artist.
Works by the artist can be found in the permanent collections of the British Museum located in London and the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris.
I love the well rounded aspect of Ma Desheng. The artist is able to express himself in so many mediums. His stones are awesome. Organic shapes with a worn surface smooth sections of rock with a great deal of variety of light and dark shapes.
My favorite works are when he arranges the rocks to resemble a female figure.
